Superb Sinner leads Italy to Davis Cup glory against Australia
  + stars: | 2023-11-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Italy's number one Sinner produced a devastating display to outclass a helpless De Minaur 6-3 6-0 after Matteo Arnaldi outlasted Alexei Popyrin in the first singles clash. "It helps a lot to play for the whole team and it's been an incredible feeling for all of us," Sinner said as Italy rejoiced at a first Davis Cup title since 1976 and only second ever. Lleyton Hewitt's Australia have now been beaten in the final in successive years having lost to Canada in 2022. Italy and Australia qualify automatically for the 16-nation Finals next year across four cities with the ITF announcing on Sunday that the Final Eight will again be hosted in Malaga. MALAGA, Spain, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Italy's Jannik Sinner won his singles match and paired up with Lorenzo Sonego to claim a doubles victory as the former champions beat the Netherlands 2-1 to book their place in the Davis Cup semi-finals on Thursday. Italy, who won their only Davis Cup title in 1976, will now take on a Serbia side featuring world number one Novak Djokovic or Britain who meet in their quarter-final later on Thursday. The changes worked well for both teams in a high-octane clash but Sinner and Sonego won the crucial points in front of a boisterous crowd to send Italy through. World number four Sinner, who was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the ATP Finals title clash on Sunday, got them back into the quarter-final tie with an impressive display against Griekspoor. Djokovic eyes 'Golden Slam' in 2024
  + stars: | 2023-11-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Djokovic, who won his seventh ATP Finals on Sunday with a straight set win over Jannik Sinner, missed out on Grand Slam this year after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final. Steffi Graf is the only player to have achieved the 'Golden Slam', winning the Australian, French and U.S. Opens, Wimbledon and a gold medal at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. "Well, you can win four slams and an Olympic gold," Djokovic said. The 24-times Grand Slam winner said he was "very, very proud" of his season.

On Sunday he beat Italy's Jannik Sinner to win a record seventh ATP Finals title. I really would like to win the Davis Cup with Serbia. Traditional Davis Cup powerhouse Australia have not won the Davis Cup for 20 years but under captain Lleyton Hewitt they believe they can go one step further than last year. The Davis Cup will also be a chance for Sinner to shake off any lingering disappointment at losing to Djokovic in the ATP Finals on Sunday. World number four Sinner leads a strong-looking Italy side who will be favourites to beat the Dutch.

Aug 16 (Reuters) - Former champion Daniil Medvedev beat Italy's Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 6-2 on Wednesday to reach the third round of the Cincinnati Open where Novak Djokovic was preparing to begin his U.S. Open preparations. "We both made some mistakes, we both made some double faults and stuff like this," third seed Medvedev, who served five double faults, said during his on-court interview. Musetti did well to claw back from 0-40 down to hold for a 2-1 lead in the second but Medvedev responded in style with a love hold and broke the Italian's serve on the next two opportunities before closing out the match. In other second-round action, Italy's Jannik Sinner, who won the Canadian Open, faces Serbian qualifier Dusan Lajovic and fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas meets American Ben Shelton. Ruud was two points away from victory at 5-3 30-0 before Davidovich Fokina served his way out of trouble. Ruud dug himself into an early hole in the breaker with some tentative serving and poor forehands and Davidovich Fokina claimed the win with a drop shot. Up next for Davidovich Fokina is American Mackenzie McDonald, who reached his first quarter-final of a Masters 1000 tournament by dispatching Canadian Milos Raonic 6-3 6-3.

Sublime Sinner downs Schwartzman, breaks Argentine hearts again
  + stars: | 2023-07-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
I think it was a good match," Sinner said in his on-court interview. Sinner cruised from there on, using both serve and forehand to devastating effect as he controlled rallies from the baseline and frustrated Schwartzman, winning five straight games as errors crept into the Argentine's game. "I tried to return as many balls as I could and I tried to play my game. Moving him around is not easy because he is so fast, so I tried to overpower him a little bit. "Hopefully I can play some good tennis here, play point-by-point and then we'll see where I can finish."

Medvedev beats Tiafoe to reach Indian Wells final

March 18 (Reuters) - Daniil Medvedev beat Frances Tiafoe 7-5 7-6(4) on Saturday to secure a place in his first Indian Wells final where he will face either top seed Carlos Alcaraz or Italy's Jannik Sinner. The fifth-seeded Russian had a glorious opportunity to grab an early break until Tiafoe, who entered the match having not dropped a set in Indian Wells, impressively stormed back from 0-40 in the fifth game of the opening set to hold serve. But Tiafoe did well to save three match points on serve to pull within 4-5 and then levelled the set a game later when Medvedev double-faulted on the second break point he faced. Medvedev, who came to Indian Wells looking to capture his fifth ATP Masters 1000 title, responded quickly with a break at love but Tiafoe struck back and turned aside another four match points to force the tiebreaker. Reporting by Frank Pingue in Toronto, editing by Pritha SarkarOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
"It's great, because it's still the beginning of the year," Medvedev, who is now ranked eighth in the world, said. Beating great players, playing great here. "In Adelaide I was playing great but lost to Novak Djokovic. Montpellier champion Sinner looked on course for back-to-back titles after claiming a tight opening set but Medvedev was not to be denied a 16th tour-level crown. "It was a tough match mentally for both of us," Medvedev said.
Greek Tsitsipas feels at home in Melbourne
  + stars: | 2023-01-22 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
MELBOURNE, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Greek third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas described the Australian Open as his "home slam", saying the conditions in Melbourne remind him of the Attic Peninsula. Tsitsipas, a three-time semi-finalist at the Australian Open, reached the quarter-finals on Sunday after he held firm to beat Italy's Jannik Sinner 6-4 6-4 3-6 4-6 6-3. With Melbourne boasting the largest Greek population in Australia, Tsitsipas said he always felt at home when competing at the season-opening major. "Another reason, another plus is wherever I look I see Greek faces, I see Greek people speaking Greek. For me it's the Australian Open."
"To be honest, it doesn't matter which round I play because I think Iga is a great player. I think that if I'm going to play my game, aggressive, I'm going to be solid from the beginning till the end." "I'm really looking forward to it. I'm sure he's much better prepared this time," said Greek Tsitsipas, who has not dropped a set in Melbourne this year. Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, another French Open champion, will play last year's Roland Garros runner-up American Coco Gauff.
He went on to blank his opponent to draw huge cheers from the crowd on Margaret Court Arena, which had witnessed an epic comeback from Andy Murray only hours earlier. The former world number one was not happy to end his match at 4.05 am on Friday, describing the late finish as a "joke" and "disrespectful." "We'll always look at it, when we do the (tournament) debrief -- like we do every year. Two all-American matches are also scheduled for Saturday, meaning that a total of six American men can advance -- which would be the highest number to reach the last 16 at the Australian Open since 1995.
